What is Iyengar Yoga?

  • The Oxford Dictionary defines Iyengar Yoga as: "a type of ashtanga (hatha) yoga focusing on the correct alignment of the body, making use of straps, wooden blocks and other objects as aids to achieving the correct postures."

  • Iyengar yoga is named after BKS Iyengar (1918 -2014), who devised this method through direct experience and personal practice.

  • BKS Iyengar pioneered the use of props in yoga practice and developed therapeutic applications of yoga for those with illness and injuries.

What is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher?

Look for the Mark

  • Iyengar Yoga is taught world-wide. To ensure that teachers protect and maintain the method developed by BKS Iyengar and his family, a standardized assessment system was developed.

  • In the U.S., the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the US (IYNAUS) is responsible for the assessment process.

  • Teachers undergo a rigorous assessment of standards in 3 categories: practice of asanas and pranayamas, a written exam, and demonstrate teaching skills.

  • Certified teachers must continue their yoga education to maintain their certification.

  • Only certified teachers can use the Iyengar name to describe their classes and use the trademark.
